I studied for by Art Foundation Course at Bath School of Art and, and it was here that my love of beautiful imagery, texture and tiny stitches evolved. During my Art Foundation Course, I played a lot with texture. I made my own paper and spent hours layering it, printing it and sewing it by hand, creating wonderful and intricate pieces of art that whilst not ground-breaking in terms of its 'message', was really rather beautiful.
I went on to study French & Fine Art at Exeter University, graduating with a 2:1 in 1992. Whilst I enjoyed my degree, I struggled with the pressure to be 'conceptual'; my natural instinct being to create work that was aesthetically pleasing rather than challenging or vaguely controversial.
I have found it truly liberating to start sewing and 'making' again. Although taking up Painting or Life Drawing again is a little way off, I do know that for the moment, I take the utmost delight in the fact that I am unashamedly, unabashedly free to create beautiful contemporary craft and art work without a whisper of conceptualism to darken my mood.
